About Organizer

Lower Silesian Center for Cellular Transplantation with National Bone Marrow Donor Registry (LSCCT & NBMDR) continues, in some areas, the work of the Division of Immunotherapy and Bone Transplant in K. Dłuski Hospital. The Division of Immunotherapy and Bone Transplant was established in 1986 in cooperation with Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy PAN (Polish Academy of Science) in Wrocław. It was the first such unit in Poland that focused on immunotherapy using bone marrow transplant and it is now the oldest unit that offers bone marrow transplants in the country.

The cooperation between the Department of Immunotherapy and Bone Transplant and the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy PAN was very fruitful and efficient because Professor Andrzej Lange is the director of both units: the hospital (LSCCT & NBMDR) and the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy PAN in Wrocław.

All the achievements and experience of the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy PAN in the area of immunogenetics were transferred to the hospital’s practice and gave chance to perform all the initial bone marrow transplants in Poland. The HLA laboratory became a part of the hospital and was awarded an accreditation of the European Federation for Immunogenetics as the first one in Poland. Extensive knowledge and a growing need triggered an idea to establish National Bone Marrow Donor Registry (NBMDR).

Lower Silesian Center for Cellular Transplantation with National Bone Marrow Donor Registry (LSCCT & NBMDR) was established on the 24th of January 2002 as an Independent Public Health Care Center, in accordance with the resolution of Lower Silesian’s Provincial Assembly no XXXVII/646/2001 dated October 12, 2001.

Professor Andrzej Lange

Prof. Andrzej Lange graduated with a medical degree with distinction from the Medical School in Wroclaw, Poland, where he also completed his doctor of medical sciences thesis and then after a critical review of his scientific activity received the title of doctor habilitatus. He served as an assistant and then associate professor in the Department of Internal Diseases and then Occupational Diseases, where he founded the Laboratory of Clinical Immunology. In 1980 he was offered a position in the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he has worked until now as the professor and head of the Laboratory and Department of Clinical Immunology. His international experience started in 1973 as a Leverhulme Fellow in the Department of Immunology of Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London, where he worked under the guidance of Professor Ivan Roitt. During an eight-year period he used to spend three months yearly as a visiting scientist in the Institute of Experimental Medicine and Biology in Borstel, FRG, headed at that time by Professor Han-Dieter Flad. He has been a short term-visitor and lectured in a number of European and North American scientific institutions including the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Paris University.
